COLLOQUIUM : ARAKELOV GEOMETRY - prof. GERD FALTINGS
Arakelov geometry constructs an intersection theory for arithmetic surfaces parallel to that for algebraic surface. It has applications in arithmetic geometry. I try to present the theory and to give some new developments dealing with degenerating curves.
Il Professor Faltings è un matematico tedesco celebre per i suoi lavori in geometria algebrica,
geometria aritmetica e teoria dei numeri. Ha conseguito il PhD nel 1978 presso l’Università di
Münster, ed in seguito è stato professore a Wuppertal e Princeton. Dal 1995 è direttore del Max
Planck Institute for Mathematics di Bonn.
Nel 1986 ha ricevuto la medaglia Fields, il più alto riconoscimento che un matematico possa ottenere.
Tra i vari altri prestigiosi riconoscimenti ricevuti ricordiamo il premio Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1996), il premio Shaw (2015), e la medaglia Cantor (2017).
